HA1 Task 1 Research Techniques

Quantitative reasearch
Quantitative is research is asking someone about information that can only be answered with a closed question like 'did you enjoy this game' which can only be answered with yes or no. Quantitative research finds out about statistics such as finding out statistics of a football match like possession or how many shot where taken and how many where on target.

This is an example of quantitative research showing the amount of people in percentage that play different genres of games.
Qualitative research
Qualitative research is asking someone about opinion of something like what did you enjoy about this game. you will end up with an open answer. Qualitative research can b used to find out peoples opinion so you ca find out what sort of games are popular and which ones are not so this way you don't spend loads of money on a game that doesn't sell any copy's.

This is
an example of qualitative data showing someones opinion on a film and where they thought it was good and where they thought it could improve,
Primary research is data where the person goes out and collects the data by themselves. Usually the person looks at secondary research to get a hint at what people like to put on things like questionnaires. It can be done in many ways such as interviews face to face or over the phone.

Primary research
Advantages: You can get both quantitative and qualitative
You can get the information you specifically need
You can have control over the information is collected instead of just finding it in a                              book or on the internet

Disadvantages: It can be very expensive to produce things like questionnaires
It can take a very long time depending on how much information you need
Not everyone will know all the information which may be needed
Once you have got all the information you need it may be out of date
You're most likely to not get the best results
An example of primary research is like finding out which is the most popular game or genre so then you can base a new game around that so it will get more sales.
All the information you end up collecting even if it's secondary will always depend on primary research
Secondary research
Secondary research is where the information is collected from someone else's primary research where you can find it on the internet or in a book.
You should always be careful when using secondary research in case the research is out dated or someone has not taken care and got the results wrong.
The term is often used in market research as people look at recent primary evidence so they can base some of the market around them statistics which can save a lot of time.
Sometimes it is needed to have secondary research as then you can check what information is needed to finish the research or to let the research design know what is popular or not.
A main part of secondary research is finding things like listing for things such as tv programs and finding out what people are watching most.
Secondary research can contain things like newspapers magazines.
